今回から、フロリダの思い出を3回に分けて投稿します。
今回は第1回目になります。
memories of Florida #1
①Florida is a classic American vacation destination that’s both famous and infamous worldwide.
②I’ve taken many trips to Florida since I was a child in the 1960’s. The first time we went to Florida my dad drove there as fast as he could.
③We only stopped to buy gasoline and use the restroom. We ate homemade sandwiches in the car. After driving for about 14 hours we reached the Florida panhandle.

④First we could smell the ocean, then we could hear the waves crashing on the shore, then finally we could see it.There were beautiful white sand dunes covered in sea oats and wide, pure white beaches.
⑤We parked at the side of the road so we could splash around in the surf for a while.It was the first time any of us had ever been to the ocean. The experience was intoxicating.
⑥We got back in the car and drove to Panama City beach where there were a few small motels and cottages among the sand dunes. We stayed for two days, playing in the ocean and eating homemade sandwiches before making the 14 hour drive back home to Missouri.
エッセイの和訳
和訳にして、エッセイの内容をひとつひとつ理解しましょう。
①Florida is a classic American vacation destination that’s both famous and infamous worldwide.
フロリダは、世界的に有名でまた悪名高いという意味でも有名なアメリカの古典的な休暇の目的地です。
②I’ve taken many trips to Florida since I was a child in the 1960’s. The first time we went to Florida my dad drove there as fast as he could.
私は1960年代の子供の頃から、フロリダに何度も旅行に行きました。私たちが初めてフロリダに行ったとき、私の父はできるだけ速くフロリダに着くように運転しました。

私たちは、ガソリンとトイレを使う以外ノンストップで車を走らせました。（外食はせずに）車の中で自家製サンドイッチを食べました。約14時間運転した後、フロリダパンハンドルに到着しました。

まず最初に海の匂いがし、次に岸に打ち寄せる波が聞こえ、そして海を見ることができました。そこには、シーオーツに覆われた美しい白い砂丘と、広くて真っ白なビーチがありました。

道路脇に駐車し、しばらくの間波打ち際で遊んでいました。私たちの誰もが海に行ったのはこれが初めてでしたので、その経験は私たちを夢中にさせました。

ピックアップ表現
エッセイの中で使われていた、面白い表現３つを取り上げてみました。
both famous and infamous
famousは有名という意味ですが、infamousは有名ではないという意味ではありません。
悪名高いとか、評判が悪いという意味です。
フロリダは夏が似合う誰もが憧れる場所ですが、フロリダ州のマイアミは全米で最も犯罪発生率が高い地域としても有名です。
そこで、キャシーママはboth famous and infamousといったんですね！
splash around in the surf
この表現、素敵ですね。水でパシャパシャすることをsplashといいます。
surfはサーフィンという意味なのですが、ここでは、波が打ち寄せる様子を意味しています。
ですので、波打ち際でパシャパシャ遊んでるといった意味になります。
intoxicating
intoxicatingは「酔わせる、夢中にさせる、うきうきさせる」という意味です。
夢中になるという英語は他にも色々ありますが、intoxicatingはいい表現ですね！
toxicは中毒性があるという意味なので、ママは興奮するほど本当に楽しかったんだということが想像できます。
