フロリダの思い出を3回に分けて投稿しています。
今回は最終回になります。
Memories of Florida #3
①after I retired last year I took my most recent vacation to Florida with my significant other. He persuaded me to go into the wilderness areas of southeastern Florida.
②We took guided tours into the Everglades and mangrove swamps. While kayaking through a mangrove swamp we saw many alligators at a safe distance. I was nervous, but I was told that alligators don’t approach canoes and kayaks.

③However, a huge alligator swam straight towards us and passed within a few feet of our kayak. It was close enough to lunge and bite us, but it didn’t. My reaction was loud and not very ladylike. At that moment I lived up to the reputation of the loud, undignified American.
④We went to some of the Ten Thousand Islands off the coast of southeastern Florida where the indigenous Calusa tribe used to live thousands of years ago. Ancient pot shards can be found there among the shells on the beaches.
⑤Our tour guide told us he has found ancient human bones there. It’s a federally protected area, so it’s illegal to remove any artifacts, bones, or shells. We can only look at them and wonder about the enormity of time and all the people who lived their lives before we were born.

直訳ではなく、内容とママの人柄を含んだ訳にしています。

ピックアップ表現
エッセイの中で使われていた、面白い表現３つを取り上げてみました。
significant other
大切な人という表現ですが、恋愛関係における大切な人の意味になります。
恋人や配偶者といった意味合いになります。

enormity
巨大さ、膨大さなど大きいことを表す名詞です。
大きいなら「enormous」になります。
巨大さを表す単語はいくつかありますが、少し使い方が違うようです。
vast は範囲、サイズ、かさ大きいこと
huge はサイズやかさがとてつもなく大きい
enormous はサイズやかさが大きく不可算名詞と相性がよい
